14 dejlige dage
A 2 star hotel at best!
Far from 4☆ standard. More like 2☆. Facilities very poor. Hotel dirty and needs a lot of repairs. Loose drain covers. Broken sun loungers. Dirty boxer shorts left for days outside our balcony. Broken lights. The list is endless! Unsafe park and playing facilities for children Reception staff in the hotel were most unhelpful. The air conditioning in our room did not work and having raised this with reception we were informed to open the patio door as the maintenance staff were not available until the following morning! Our room being on the ground floor i felt this was very inappropriate and unsafe. On check in we were just given our room key and no other information leaving us to ask the question of how we even found the way to our room! The quality of food was very poor. No variety and food warm at best. Only 1 place to eat on site which you had to que for 30 minutes to enter. After breakfast there was nowhere to obtain a drink until the bar opened! After lunch finished at 2:30pm the next opportunity to eat wasnt until 7pm, and then if you didnt arrive for 7pm you were waiting in a long que to enter the buffet. Left over food obviously warmed up from previous night.Had to eat out everyday. Only 1 staff member serving at the bar meant long queues to obtain a drink. Extra charges ocurred for drinks such as cappuccino or certain cocktails. Quite often ran out of the drink you requested. One of the photographs highlights the lack of basic facilities.....working parasols!..we were informed by the staff to search for a twig to keep the parasol up! Avoid unless you want a 2 star hotel.
A really good experience
We booked fairly last minute as a change of plan from Spain. We wanted an inexpensive all-inclusive hotel on the beach and close to the airport and that is exactly what we got. We were a little put off by some of the poor reviews but we actually had nothing to worry about. The staff were all charming and helpful, our room was cleaned every day and we very much enjoyed the food. We spent a lot of time in the sea; the beach is pebbly but it is about a three minute walk from the hotel and there is sand after a very short walk over the pebbles. The staff were operating under difficult circumstances but all managed to keep a sense of humour and act with kindness at all times. Our room was spotlessly clean - basic but comfortable, we are quite happy with firm beds. Yes, we ate out a couple of times - we wanted to try some of the local Tavernas and bars - but having paid only £85 a night we felt it wasn't extravagant to do so. We also very much enjoyed the food in the hotel; there was a good selection with freshly cooked eggs or omelettes to order for breakfast, always something different from the grill (very popular)at lunch or dinner and plenty of salad and fruit available at every meal. I'm not sure which hotel those dissatisfied customers stayed at but we had very happy stay at Gouves Bay - I have just booked a week next September and we are very much looking forward to a return trip.
Okay, Pretty Basic
We booked Gouves Bay hotel for seven nights in September. Our opinions on arrival were quite good, reception staff seemed polite and helpful, it was our first time in Greece so they helped signpost us around the area and gave us some recommendations of places to go. The pool area was nice, perhaps slightly on the small side, but perfect for what we wanted it for (probably wouldn’t be great for families with younger children) The hotel was right in the beach, which made up for the pool. The room itself was nice, but pretty basic, little bits and pieces needed a lot more attention. The bathroom was nice and modern, but the toilet seat was hanging off, the shower had no screen, so flooded every time you used it, there was a nice fridge in the room for cold drinks etc but no cups - just little bits that needed more attention to detail. The view was classed as ‘the garden’ but it was basically looking on to other people’s balcony’s and there was a couple of trees in the background- I would use the term ‘garden’ very loosely. It was quite noisy where we were, especially when there was a delivery of six beer barrels at just gone seven one morning, which was parked up and unpacked right outside our balcony. What did concern me slightly with the room is that we were told that ‘due to covid, rooms could only be cleaned once every three days’ - surely under the circumstances they need to be cleaned more? Even in the three days, our room was not cleaned once, all that happened was the bin was emptied and we were given new towels, no other cleaning was done and the floor was filthy. We were booked all inclusive, but to be fair we did not have dinner or breakfast there once, so I can’t comment too much on the food. We had lunch there a couple of times, and had no complaints. There was a lot of selection to choose from. Drinks were awful, you had a glass of coke with lunch which wasn’t much bigger than a shot glass, and all the alcoholic drinks were small, and about 80% water. There was so much around bar and restaurant wise that offered better quality food and drinks, we paid to eat and drink our every night. If you so stay in the area, highly recommend Scorpios and The Anfield Bar. Unfortunately whilst we were out there, the UK government changed the rules, and all but non essential travel was put into place, meaning if you couldn’t get home within 48hours, you had to quarantine. We were only there for four days when we had to fly home. Out of politeness, we went down to inform the receptionist that we would be checking out early. Our flight home wasn’t until twenty to nine in the evening, and we were told that we would need to be out of the room by 12pm Tuesday (the day of our new flights) now I understand that the hotel has its check out time, however we wasn’t flying until the night and the room was paid for another three days. We were told that we still needed to be out by twelve and that if we wasn’t we would be fined €46 each. When we asked if there was any possibility we would stay until later, just until our taxi arrived, we were told we would have to pay €7 an hour to stay and that we could no longer use our all inclusive bands and would need to pay for any food, drink of facility we used. Now I know we checked out earlier than expected, through circumstances out of our control but I think their attitude and approach to the situation was absolutely disgusting and there was no compassion there whatsoever. The hotel was not cheap to book, and we on paper still had another three days paid for, so why the hell should we be expected to pay extra?! If anything we’d overpaid and was owed money back, and certainly didn’t deserve to be threatened with a fine! Money making scheme under these unprecedented times? Extremely possible. Overall, the hotel was basic, and needed more attention to detail. If your a couple, and don’t intend on spending much time, then yeah do it! If your a family with children, I would book elsewhere, the pool was too small for children to play in and there was nothing for them to do. There were several children sitting round the pool looking extremely bored with nothing to do. Also, don’t waste your money going all inclusive, it’s really not worth it! If it wasn’t for the disgusting attitude of the staff when it came to check out, maybe we would have considered coming back to the hotel, but after that we definitely will not be coming back. Greece - yes, Gouves - yes, Gouves Bay - never again I would also question if the staff have even had any type of training when it came to covid-19, as when it came to cleanliness they seemed pretty clueless. And if they had, this seriously needs to be revisited!
We came to Gouves Bay in August 2020. In the begining we were scared about COVID-19 but uppon arrival we were infomed about all the protection measures and we were ok. The room was super clean and disinfected. We smelled the cleaness. The pool area is full with sunbeds we do not understand why other guests complained. There is space but not everyone can have a spot excactly next to the pool. We enjoyed the garden, the most relaxing place. The hotel is on the beach. In front of the hotel is a sandy rocky beach but in 5 minutes walkable distance you can find a sandy beach. We liked the food. It was the first time in Crete but we will come back as soon as possible.
