Great views and location. Friendly staff. Very basic and dated room.
Positives: Excellent location with close walking distance to Ios town, a mini market and to the bus stop if adventuring out. Beautiful pool terrace area with impressive sunset views over Ios and a convenient pool bar with a range of drinks and snacks available - all reasonably priced. There was also a variety of massage services available to pre book during your stay. Super friendly staff that are happy to help. Free transfer to and from the port was a brilliant service included. Hotel breakfast was basic (tea/coffee/juice/egg/toast/pastries/jams) but seemed reasonable at €6pp if you did not fancy the walk to town to find a place each morning. Room had a mini fridge and good AC which was useful. The family running the hotel also own a restaurant called The Mills where they gave us 10% off our meal as hotel guests, we highly recommend using this incentive as the food was really good and great value. To know before booking: Our double room (Room 21) consisted of 2 single beds pushed together and an extra single bed to the side. The main bed mattresses were both poor quality and pretty uncomfortable but did the job for a few nights. One out of the 2 was particularly bad and springs has totally gone in the middle leading to poor nights sleep. The room Itself felt dated and a bit grubby. Walls etc needed a good paint. Don’t expect a fresh and modern room if booking here as this was not the case. Simple and basic. Bathroom had a little mould in the shower and the tap fixture in the bathroom was also broken and unattached from the basin. Balcony was very tiny and had a view of the back of the property and a cement mixer - we decided not to use this area. The hotel grounds are located at the top of the hill hence the great views but it is a short and steep walk back up from the town. This was not a huge issue for us but please be aware others may struggle.
My mother arrived here for a short break and we were overwhelmed from the moment we stepped off the ferry from Mykonos (around a 2 hour journey €100 return business class) Kyriakos, the owner was there waiting for us and took us on the short journey to the hotel in a minibus wearing a mask so felt Covid safe. When we arrived, the hotel is on a hill so had the most spectacular view! I would go as far as to say it would rival the views of Santorini although this was in the view anyway!! The buildings are the glorious white washed and blue painted you would expect to see in traditional Greek villages and with the beautiful pink flowers all over. We had beautiful wilderness behind us and sometimes visited by the couple of nearby horses. The room was larger than expected, a large double bed and single bed with very comfortable memory foam mattresses, clean bedding and extra blankets if required. The bathroom was very plush by all standards with Skala branded soaps. The swimming pool- my goodness! We had the whole plane to ourselves as we were the last guests of the season but you can imagine when the pool bar is open and all the greek nights going on, would be great fun. However, we had the loungers and four posters to ourselves and felt very VIP! Breakfast was included and we ate at the nearby Mills restaurant run by the family. All wearing masks for service, food from grill and more traditional (you must try the rabbit stifado!) and very reasonable with free local honey and cinnamon raki and complimentary mini ice creams. The hospitality and warmth shown by this family is second to none and we will be booking for next year. We might even have time for some spa time, also provided. It is on a hill, so heels not recommended. The town has lots to do and was still relatively busy. From start to finish, perfect. Efharisto poli!
Lovely friendly family run hotel
Cannot thank the lovely owners of this hotel for the incredible service they gave us during our time here. They couldn't do enough for us and offer free transport to and from the port. The hotel itself is incredible value for money with good sized, clean rooms and a lovely pool area, all with incredible views. Cannot recommend it enough, massive thank you to all at Skala for giving us the best stay, can't wait to return to Ios soon!
Even though we had a reservation, it was clear that our stay was unexpected and improvised. At the ferry port there was no one with a sign for us (as had been promised) and we did not know what to do. After a while, a young woman (who turned out to be the owner's daughter) asked if we were going to the Skala and called for transportation. When we arrived, chairs and furniture were being stowed away, the pool was half full of green water, and a group of home appliances in disrepair were on the path to our room. The breakfast consisted of coffee, bread (with honey, butter, cream cheese, sliced cheese and ham) and an unpeeled fruit with a knife. When we asked for eggs and bacon we were told we would have to pay extra. We ended up paying 18 additional euros for our breakfasts both days. In the afternoon we spent a considerable amount of time calling and walking to different restaurants only to discover that almost all of them had closed for the season. Shops were also closed. When we asked about checkout the next day, we were told we could stay a bit longer if we wished. We agreed on leaving at 2:30 p.m. However, at 1:30 p.m, when we were not yet ready, we were unexpectedly told we had to leave immediately. In conclusion, we did feel welcome nor well received.
Wonderful Hotel, people and incredible views.
We arrived at Skala Hotel having not got off to the best of starts to a holiday, we had not realized that Ios is a small Island North of Santorini rather than on the island itself! However, it turned out to be a fantastic "mistake" to make, I probably wouldn't have bothered to book had I realized you needed a ferry to get there and gone somewhere more direct, but, that's what makes Ios so very special, especially off season, you have to make a little effort to get there but the result is so very worth it! Skala is owned and ran by Kyriacos and his family, a more pleasant, helpful, courteous and hard-working family you would struggle to find. Nothing was too much trouble, breakfast was excellent with a fantastic view to take in whilst eating. The room was clean, spacious with incredible views of the town below, sunrise and sunset here is an unforgettably beautiful experience. The rooms were cleaned daily, clean towels daily and bedding changed every other day, the hotel itself appears to mimic a Greek street in terms of layout, each room has their own area to sit and relax outside, the layout gives a very communal feel with the other guests. Whilst rated as only two stars on LoveHolidays (with whom we booked) it was apparent from some other guests staying with us who clearly had the means to stay wherever they chose that Skala is very special and well worth seeking out especially given the prices. Skala isn't a huge 5 star Hotel complex with staff seeing to your every desire, it isn't right next to the beach, its on a very steep hill also despite this, you'll struggle to find a better view in Greece never mind on Ios, friendlier owners and staff. Whilst we stumbled upon Skala almost by accident, it is no accident that we plan to return many more times to this exquisite place.
